A cataract occurs when the clear, natural lens within your eye becomes cloudy. The cloudy condition interferes with light passing through the lens. The cloudier the lens, the more your vision is impaired. Often cataracts have few symptoms in their early stages. At later stages, symptoms include blurry vision, sudden onset of nearsightedness, changes in color perception, and night driving difficulties. Detecting cataracts is accomplished by having a dilated eye exam. Treatment of cataracts depends upon how the cataract has affected your vision. In its early stages, it may be possible to obtain an acceptable level of vision by wearing eyeglasses. In its later stages, cataracts may be corrected via surgery. This involves removing your clouded, natural lens and replacing it with a clear, plastic one. At Advanced Eye Physicians, sutureless cataract surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis at a local surgery center. If you are over 60 years of age and have not had an eye exam in more than one year, or if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, contact Advanced Eye Physicians to schedule a complete eye exam.
